welcome
Welcome to the website of Lorraine McLoughlin and Peter Fitzgerald.
We have made Eliza Cottage our permanent home for nearly 20 years. Near Yankalilla in the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula of South Australia, 85km south from Adelaide, we pursue a life involved in the arts of the local community, as well as our own creative work.

wordsFrom late 2021 through to September 2023, I published 1,000-word essays on local artists in the Yankalilla Regional News. The interview series featured 20 local personalities drawn from our rich pool of local talent of painters, sculptors, and musicians. They can be viewed here online.
Three new essays can be found under articles (Revisiting the origins of Festival Fleurieu), and under musings in eclectic bits and pieces (Lobster boats: did I look the wrong way? and A vivid 48 hours in Iran in 1991). My family history, Glimpses into the family heritage of Kevin and Sylvia Penny, was published mid-2022. It is available for viewing and downloading. For publications in 2021 see: Thinking on paper, and Elaine Haxton: A colourful artist and life. Please send comments and orders via contact details on this site. |
imagesPeter is happy to have private visits to his studio by arrangement on 0438 151 432. He often opens his studio during Festival Fleurieu and other events.
The obsession with rocks and mountainous landscapes continues. He spends hours alternating between his studio and garden and is an avid reader. |
seasonsLate rains through spring and into December meant 2024 began with unusual greenness before summer turned grasses golden as they do every year, the norm in this Mediterranean climate.
At Eliza Cottage, the garden plantings continue to thicken, the trees grow taller, and it is the centre of our world, providing deep joy. Last year it was an outdoor venue for a sold out Festival event featuring actor Anna Steen reading notable letters of mostly famous people with musical interludes from Kym Mitchell’s saxophone. Not only humans are our welcome visitors. A family of kangaroos came and stayed for months and still visits often, and a range of birds increasingly drink from eleven bird baths, and many come back annually to nest. We also see echidnas, but the less wanted native rats burrow indiscriminately. The pampered chooks and alpacas of course don’t have to compete with anyone for food. |
